Djon África (João Miller Guerra & Filipa Reis, BRA 2018, OmU, DCP, 98min)

For many years we’ve enjoyed a steadily enriching cooperation with the This Human World Festival, a Viennese film festival of human rights, and our ways and ideas couldn’t cross any better than this year. In the course of the media meeting BETWEEN CULTURES, This Human World present the feature film Djon África with a subsequent film talk.

The athmospheric, quiet feature Djon África which has been shot in Portugal, Brazil and Cape Verde, premiered at the renowned IFFR in the Netherlands at the beginning of the year – during the course of YOUKI 2018 it will be available for the first time in Austria. Miguel aka Djon África grows up in Lisbon being coddled by his grandmother until he decides to go on the search for his father and his heritage. His travels lead him to the African coast of Cape Verde, a formerly Portuguese colony. Wherever Djon goes though, as a Portuguese with African roots he constantly has to struggle with his different identities. Charming, playful, and yet laced with a quiet melancholy the film explores the belonging and lifelong dream of his main character while creating a sensitive, multicoloured portrait of the cinematically neglected Cape Verde – of its harsh beauty, its traditions and its inhabitants between their unshakeable joy of life and their struggle for survival.
